13 foundation piles (in the form of a letter H) - build up regardless of suit from the first card until each pile contains 8 cards, wrapping from King to Ace as necessary. At the start of the game one card of each rank is dealt to these piles.
2 waste piles (below stock) - top card available for play on the foundations. Cards that cannot be played to the foundations are played here from the stock.
